WORLD WONDERS - PETRA, JORDAN

Petra is an ancient city located in modern-day Jordan that was once the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom. The city is known for its elaborate rock-cut architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Petra was founded in the 6th century BCE and became an important trading center for the Nabataeans. It was a key stop on the trade route that connected the Arabian Peninsula to the Mediterranean, and its strategic location allowed the Nabataeans to control the trade of valuable goods such as frankincense and myrrh.

The city of Petra is built into the red sandstone cliffs of the Wadi Musa and is known for its impressive rock-cut structures, including the Treasury, the Temple of the Winged Lions, and the Monastery. These structures were carved directly into the cliffs and are decorated with intricate carvings and sculptures.

In addition to its impressive architecture, Petra is also home to a number of important cultural and historical sites, including tombs, temples, and cisterns. It is a popular tourist destination and offers visitors a unique glimpse into the ancient past.

Overall, Petra is a fascinating and beautifully preserved ancient city that offers a rich cultural experience for anyone who visits. It is a must-see destination for anyone interested in history and archaeology.
